What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is the medical specialty that deals with diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. A dermatologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating a vast array of conditions, from common issues like acne and eczema to more serious diseases like skin cancer. The skin is the body's largest organ, and dermatology encompasses both medical and surgical aspects. Cosmetology, a subfield, focuses on aesthetic procedures to improve the appearance of the skin, address signs of aging, and correct cosmetic concerns in a safe, medical environment.

Common Conditions Managed

Dermatology covers a wide range of conditions affecting people of all ages:

• ✓Acne: A common inflammatory skin condition affecting hair follicles and oil glands.
• ✓Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) and Psoriasis: Chronic, inflammatory skin conditions that cause red, itchy, and scaly patches.

Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches

Diagnosis in dermatology often involves a thorough physical examination of the skin, sometimes aided by a special magnifying lens called a dermatoscope. A skin biopsy, where a small sample of skin is removed for laboratory analysis, may be performed to confirm a diagnosis. Treatment plans are highly personalized. Medical treatments include topical creams and ointments, oral medications, and biologic injections for severe psoriasis. Procedural treatments are also common, such as cryotherapy (freezing) for warts, surgical excision for skin cancers, and advanced laser therapies for scar revision or pigment removal. Cosmetic treatments often include chemical peels, Botox injections, and dermal fillers.
