What is ENT & Head & Neck Surgery?
ENT, or Otorhinolaryngology, is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. ENT specialists, also known as otolaryngologists, are physicians trained in both medical and surgical management of these areas. The field is incredibly diverse, dealing with issues related to hearing and balance, breathing and smelling, speech and swallowing, as well as tumors of the head and neck. The goal is to improve the quality of life by restoring these vital functions.
Common Conditions Managed
ENT specialists treat a wide variety of conditions in both children and adults:
- ✓Ear (Otology): Hearing loss, ear infections, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and balance disorders like vertigo.
- ✓Nose (Rhinology): Chronic sinusitis, nasal allergies, nasal polyps, deviated septum, and problems with the sense of smell.
- ✓Throat (Laryngology): Sore throat, tonsillitis, voice disorders (hoarseness), and swallowing problems.
- ✓Head and Neck: Cancers of the mouth, throat, voice box, thyroid, and salivary glands.
- ✓Sleep Disorders: Conditions like snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
- ✓Paediatric ENT: Common childhood issues like recurrent tonsil infections and fluid in the ears.
Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches
Diagnosis often begins with a physical examination using specialized tools to see inside the ear, nose, and throat. An audiogram (hearing test) is used to assess hearing loss. Endoscopy, a procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a camera is used, allows for a detailed view of the nasal passages, sinuses, and voice box. Treatments can be medical, involving medications for infections or allergies. Surgical treatments are common and often minimally invasive. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is used to treat chronic sinusitis. Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils. For hearing loss, solutions can range from hearing aids to surgical procedures like placing cochlear implants.
