What is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health and can differentiate mental health problems from other underlying medical conditions that could present with psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatrists are trained to understand the complex relationship between emotional and medical illnesses. They provide comprehensive care through a variety of treatment modalities, aiming to help patients manage their conditions, improve their functioning, and enhance their overall quality of life in a confidential and compassionate setting.
Common Conditions Managed
Psychiatry addresses a wide range of conditions that affect mood, thought, and behaviour:
- ✓Depressive Disorders: Including major depressive disorder, characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest.
- ✓Bipolar and Related Disorders: Conditions involving extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression).
- ✓Anxiety Disorders: Including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, and social anxiety disorder.
- ✓Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Characterized by unwanted, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and behaviours (compulsions).
- ✓Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders: Such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
- ✓Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders.
- ✓Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders.
Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches
Diagnosis in psychiatry is made through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which includes discussing the patient's symptoms, personal and family history, and mental state. There are no lab tests for mental illness, but a psychiatrist may order medical tests to rule out other physical causes. Treatment is holistic and tailored to the individual. The two main pillars of treatment are psychotherapy and medication. Psychotherapy, or 'talk therapy', involves working with a therapist to develop coping strategies and change thinking patterns (e.g., Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - CBT). Medication, such as antidepressants or mood stabilizers, can help correct chemical imbalances in the brain that are associated with some mental health conditions. Often, a combination of both medication and therapy provides the best results.
